How Bruce Dickinson’s Cancer Battle Advice Gave Dave Hope
Megadeth frontman Dave Mustaine has opened up about the vital support he received from Iron Maiden singer Bruce Dickinson during his battle with throat cancer. Mustaine received his diagnosis in February 2019 and was declared cancer-free later that October.
Speaking in the new issue of Metal Hammer to promote his book In My Darkest Hour, Mustaine revealed that Dickinson—who faced and overcame his own throat cancer diagnosis a few years prior—offered actionable guidance that stood out from standard well-wishes.
The Advice That Provided Hope
“Bruce had some fantastic stuff to say as a cancer survivor,” Mustaine told Metal Hammer. “There’s a big difference between someone saying, ‘You’re in my thoughts and prayers’, versus somebody who goes into detail about his treatment and tells you about the outcome. I needed hope, and he gave me it.”
Dickinson’s core advice to Mustaine centered on a practical mantra: surrounding oneself with positive, upbeat people and maintaining a supportive environment throughout the ordeal.
Peer Support During the Diagnosis
Mustaine made his diagnosis public shortly after learning of it to alert his support system. The announcement brought an outpouring of messages from across the metal community, including Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne, Kiss guitarist Paul Stanley, and former Metallica bandmate James Hetfield.
Reflecting on the messages from his peers, Mustaine noted, “It wasn’t any more significant than the other people who gave their support to me. I’ve always looked at that stuff like one beggar giving another beggar a crust of bread. But I appreciate it, because I know how our time is measured out, and to take the time to stop and do something like that means a lot.”
Mustaine discusses his cancer journey extensively in In My Darkest Hour, which hits shelves September 24 via Constable.
