1955 Harry Belafonte recorded the traditional Jamaican work song “The Banana Boat Song (Day-O)” in Webster Hall’s Grand Ballroom. It reached No. 5 in early 1957 and became his signature performance.
1962 The Four Seasons entered the Hot 100 at No. 66 with “Big Girls Don’t Cry.” It became their second consecutive No. 1, leading the pop chart for five weeks and R&B chart for three, and reached No. 13 in Britain.
1962 Bobby “Boris” Pickett’s “Monster Mash,” recorded in under two hours, reached No. 1 on the Hot 100 and became a perennial Halloween favorite.
1969 Apple released John Lennon and Yoko Ono’s Wedding Album in an elaborate box with photographs, drawings, a marriage-certificate reproduction, a wedding-cake image, and press clippings. The experimental set lasted three weeks on Billboard, peaking at No. 178, and did not chart in Britain.
1973 The Rolling Stones topped the Hot 100 with “Angie,” also a No. 5 British hit. Contrary to persistent stories connecting it to David Bowie’s then-wife Angela, Keith Richards said he selected the name at random while writing the melody.
1976 Led Zeppelin’s concert film The Song Remains the Same premiered at New York’s Cinema I, blending footage from 1973 Madison Square Garden shows with fantasy sequences centered on each band member.
1977 A plane carrying Lynyrd Skynyrd crashed en route to Baton Rouge, killing Ronnie Van Zant, Steve Gaines, Cassie Gaines, road manager Dean Kilpatrick, and both pilots. Gary Rossington, Allen Collins, Billy Powell, Leon Wilkeson, and other survivors suffered serious injuries; the band remained inactive for a decade before returning with Johnny Van Zant.
1979 Herb Alpert reached No. 1 with the instrumental “Rise,” making him the only performer to top the U.S. chart with both vocal and instrumental records. The No. 13 British hit won the next Grammy for Best Pop Instrumental Performance.
1979 Bob Dylan made his only Saturday Night Live musical-guest appearance, backed by a gospel choir for the live debuts of “Gotta Serve Somebody,” “I Believe in You,” and “When You Gonna Wake Up?” from Slow Train Coming.
1992 Arista released Kenny G’s sixth album, Breathless. Despite critical hostility, it reached No. 2 and earned Diamond status with twelve-times-Platinum U.S. shipments.
1997 Canned Heat guitarist Henry Vestine died from heart and respiratory failure in a Paris hotel at 52. The band placed nine albums on Billboard and scored the Top 40 hits “On the Road Again,” “Going Up the Country,” and “Let’s Work Together.”

1965 Hedy Lamarr guest-hosted Shindig!, where the Kingsmen performed “Louie Louie,” “Money,” and “Jolly Green Giant.” Joe Tex, the Dave Clark Five, Brenda Holloway, and Eddie Rambeau also appeared.
1965 Bill Black, bassist on Elvis Presley’s early hits, died from a brain tumor at 39. His later Bill Black’s Combo placed eight singles in the U.S. Top 40, including “Smokie, Part 2” and “White Silver Sands.”
1965 The Spencer Davis Group recorded “Keep On Running” at London’s Pye Studios. It reached No. 1 in Britain the next January but peaked at only No. 76 in America.
1967 Lulu’s “To Sir with Love” began five weeks at No. 1 and became Billboard’s top-selling single of the year. It did not chart in Britain because executives placed it on the B-side of “Let’s Pretend” rather than issuing it as an A-side.
1972 Chuck Berry earned his first American No. 1 with the live novelty “My Ding-a-Ling,” seventeen years after his foundational early hits. Recorded in Coventry after Berry arrived 90 minutes late, it also topped Britain’s chart.
1972 Curtis Mayfield’s Super Fly soundtrack began four weeks atop Billboard’s album chart. Driven by “Freddie’s Dead” and “Superfly,” it became his only solo No. 1 album and reportedly earned more than the film it accompanied.
1976 Keith Moon played his final complete Who concert at Toronto’s Maple Leaf Gardens. He later recorded Who Are You despite declining health and died from an overdose of alcohol-withdrawal medication in September 1978.
1976 Kansas released Leftoverture, the band’s commercial breakthrough. Powered by “Carry On Wayward Son,” the album reached the U.S. Top 5 and ultimately went five-times Platinum.
1977 Meat Loaf released Bat Out of Hell. Though peaking at No. 14 in America and No. 9 in Britain, it sold more than 43 million copies worldwide and earned fourteen-times-Platinum U.S. certification.

1961 Chubby Checker performed “The Twist” and “Let’s Twist Again” on Ed Sullivan, reviving interest that sent the original back to No. 1 the next January. It remains the only single to top the U.S. chart in two separate calendar years.
1963 Kenny Rogers, 24, married his third wife, Margo Gladys Anderson. They had a son, Kenneth Jr., and divorced in 1975; Rogers later married Marianne Gordon and Wanda Miller.

1966 Supremes A’ Go-Go displaced Revolver at No. 1, making the Supremes the first female group to top America’s album chart.
