1958 After receiving special permission from the US Army, Elvis Presley gives one last press conference at the Military Ocean Terminal in Brooklyn. He then joins the rest of the 3rd Armored Division on the USS General Randall for a voyage to the seaport town of Bremerhaven, Germany to begin his overseas military service.
1958 "To Know Him Is To Love Him" by The Teddy Bears entered the Billboard Hot 100 at No. 88. Lead singer Annette Kleinbard was backed by Phil Spector on guitar, Marshall Leib on bass and last minute addition Sandy Nelson on drums. 1972 Danny O'Keefe entered the Billboard Top 40 with "Good Time Charlie's Got The Blues". The self-penned tune will rise to No. 9 during its ten week stay, earning a Gold Record for selling a million copies. Over the years, the song has been covered by Elvis Presley, Dwight Yoakam, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Charlie Rich and Jerry Lee Lewis.
1972 After a string of TV and Las Vegas stage shows had made him famous, Mac Davis achieves his only US chart topper with "Baby Don't Get Hooked On Me". It made No. 29 in the UK. Mac later had three more Top 40 hits over the next two years and starred in his own weekly TV show on NBC from '74 to '76 before enjoying further success in Country music.
1974 Robbie McIntosh, the 24-year-old drummer for The Average White Band, died from an accidental overdose during an early-morning afterparty at a private home in the Hollywood Hills.
