  • 1968 Eric Clapton recorded the guitar solo for The Beatles’ “While My Guitar Gently Weeps,” the first Beatles track to feature a major rival rock guitarist as a guest.
  • 1970 Jimi Hendrix made his final major concert appearance at the Love and Peace Festival on Germany’s Isle of Fehmarn. He died less than two weeks later.
  • 1975 Glen Campbell’s “Rhinestone Cowboy” reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and became a million-selling, Grammy-nominated hit.
  • 1989 Neil Young’s “This Note’s for You” won Video of the Year at the MTV Video Music Awards, reversing MTV’s earlier ban on the anti-commercialization video.
  • 1990 Tom Fogerty, Creedence Clearwater Revival’s rhythm guitarist, died at 48 from respiratory failure. He later released five solo albums after leaving the group.
  • 1994 Session pianist Nicky Hopkins died in Nashville at 50. His celebrated keyboard work appeared on recordings by The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, The Who, Jeff Beck, and the Small Faces.
  • 1997 Elton John performed a rewritten “Candle in the Wind” at Princess Diana’s funeral. Released as a charity single, it became a global No. 1 and sold more than 33 million copies.
  • 2023 The Rolling Stones announced Hackney Diamonds, their first album of new original material since 2005 and their first full-length release after Charlie Watts’ death.

  • 1964 The Beatles played two shows at Toronto’s Maple Leaf Gardens before more than 35,000 fans. Asked how long the group would last, John Lennon replied, “Longer than you.”
  • 1968 Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, John Paul Jones, and John Bonham performed together for the first time at Denmark’s Gladsaxe Teen Club as The New Yardbirds, before adopting the name Led Zeppelin.
  • 1978 The Who’s drummer Keith Moon died at 32 from an overdose of Heminevrin. He died in the same London bedroom where Cass Elliot had died four years earlier.
  • 1987 Pink Floyd began the A Momentary Lapse of Reason tour in Ottawa despite a legal challenge from former member Roger Waters. A later settlement let the group continue using the name.
  • 2003 Warren Zevon died of mesothelioma at 56. He was best known for Excitable Boy and its hit “Werewolves of London.”
  • 2011 Buddy Holly received a posthumous star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in a ceremony attended by his widow Maria Elena and Phil Everly.
  • 2018 The U.S. Postal Service issued a commemorative John Lennon stamp using a photograph by Bob Gruen.
