1965 Barry McGuire’s controversial “Eve of Destruction” reached No. 1 on the U.S. chart.
1965 The Beatles animated television series premiered on ABC, using the group’s music and voice actors for dialogue.
1967 The Beatles began recording “The Fool on the Hill” at Abbey Road. The session was also the first Beatles recording date attended by Yoko Ono.
1971 Cat Stevens’ “Peace Train” was released in the United States and later reached No. 7 on the Billboard Hot 100.
1973 The Rolling Stones’ Goats Head Soup was certified Gold, helped by the No. 1 single “Angie.”
1976 Boston’s debut album became the fastest-selling debut album in rock history, eventually selling more than 17 million copies.
1980 Led Zeppelin drummer John Bonham died at 32 after choking on his vomit. The band disbanded that December, saying it could not continue without him.
1982 Queen appeared on Saturday Night Live, performing “Crazy Little Thing Called Love” and “Under Pressure” in what became their last U.S. show with Freddie Mercury.

1956 Fats Domino’s version of “Blueberry Hill” entered the Billboard Top 100 and eventually reached No. 2.

1968 Dusty Springfield began recording the backing tracks for Dusty in Memphis at American Sound Studios. The album later included “Son of a Preacher Man.”
1969 The Beatles released Abbey Road in Britain. It debuted at No. 1, stayed there for eleven weeks, and eventually sold more than 31 million copies worldwide.
1974 John Lennon released Walls and Bridges, his fifth studio album. It topped the Billboard chart and produced his first solo No. 1 single, “Whatever Gets You Thru the Night.”
1987 The Grateful Dead’s “Touch of Grey” peaked at No. 9, becoming the band’s only Billboard Top 40 single.
2003 Robert Palmer died of a heart attack at 54. He succeeded both as a solo artist and as a member of the supergroup Power Station.
2007 A mistrial was declared in the first murder trial of producer Phil Spector. He was convicted at a second trial in 2009.
2021 Commander Cody, whose band had a No. 9 hit with “Hot Rod Lincoln,” died at 77, while Status Quo bassist Alan Lancaster also died after a battle with multiple sclerosis.

1969 Carlos Santana’s debut album entered the Billboard chart and eventually reached No. 4, helped by the No. 9 single “Evil Ways.”
1976 Ringo Starr released Ringo’s Rotogravure in America, the last album to feature active involvement from all four former Beatles.
1979 Jimmy McCulloch, the Scottish guitarist who played with Thunderclap Newman and Paul McCartney & Wings, died at 26 from accidental morphine and alcohol poisoning.
1986 Cliff Burton, Metallica’s 24-year-old bassist, was killed when the band’s tour bus overturned in rural Sweden. He was later inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with Metallica.
2004 Producer Phil Spector was formally charged with the murder of actress Lana Clarkson. He was convicted in 2009 and died in custody in 2021.
2010 The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame announced its nominees for the Class of 2011, including Alice Cooper, Neil Diamond, Bon Jovi, and The J. Geils Band.
2016 Bruce Springsteen released his autobiography Born to Run in print and digital editions.
2018 Jefferson Airplane co-founder Marty Balin died at 76. He later sang on Jefferson Starship hits including “Miracles” and “Runaway.”
