1954 Britain’s New Musical Express expanded its weekly singles ranking from a Top 12 to a Top 20. The chart was assembled by phoning roughly twenty record shops for their ten best sellers, and its popularity soon prompted competitors including Record Mirror and Melody Maker to publish charts of their own.
1956 20th Century Fox recalled Elvis Presley to film a revised ending for Love Me Tender after preview audiences were devastated by his character’s death. The plot remained unchanged, but a ghostly image of Elvis singing the title song was placed over the closing credits; because he had recently dyed his naturally brown hair black, the added footage also created a continuity error. 1958 Elvis Presley reached West Germany aboard a troopship at Bremerhaven and traveled by dedicated military train to Ray Barracks in Friedberg. He joined Company D, 32nd Armor Regiment of the U.S. Army’s 3rd Armored Division, beginning a German posting that lasted into early 1960.
1961 Lonnie Donegan earned his biggest American hit when the novelty song “Does Your Chewing Gum Lose Its Flavour (On the Bedpost Overnight?)” climbed to No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100. The record had originally reached No. 3 in Britain two years earlier.
1962 Brian Epstein formally signed his management agreement with the Beatles. John Lennon and Ringo Starr signed for themselves, while Harold Harrison and James McCartney signed for their underage sons; Epstein’s sliding commission could rise to 25 percent once the group’s combined weekly earnings exceeded £800.
1962 The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson premiered on NBC. Its familiar instrumental opening, “Johnny’s Theme,” was composed by Paul Anka, with unused lyrics credited to Carson; the theme reportedly earned each man about $200,000 annually during a run that ended in May 1992 after 6,714 episodes.
1964 Vee-Jay Records issued the double album The Beatles vs. The Four Seasons before a legal deadline ended its Beatles distribution rights. The expensive package contained no new material, combining existing pressings of Introducing... The Beatles and Golden Hits of the Four Seasons; it lasted three weeks on Billboard’s album chart and peaked at No. 142.
1965 Bob Dylan introduced a new touring group at Carnegie Hall consisting of Robbie Robertson, Garth Hudson, Rick Danko, Richard Manuel, and Levon Helm. Then billed as Levon and the Hawks, the musicians would become known simply as the Band by 1968.
1965 The Byrds released “Turn! Turn! Turn!” in the United States. Adapted by Pete Seeger from Ecclesiastes apart from its final line, the recording reportedly required 78 takes over five days, became the Byrds’ second No. 1 and final Top 10 single, and entered the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2001.
1966 Chicago station WGN-TV aired the half-hour special An Evening with Gary Lewis and the Playboys. Alongside material from their seven consecutive Billboard Top 10 hits, the band performed the Beatles’ “Run for Your Life,” and Gary Lewis impersonated his comedian father Jerry Lewis during “Time Stands Still.”
1967 Burglars ransacked Mick Jagger’s London flat while he was away, escaping with valuable jewelry and designer furs belonging to his girlfriend Marianne Faithfull.
1968 John Sebastian officially left the Lovin’ Spoonful to begin a solo career that included twelve albums, session work, and music for children’s films and television. His greatest commercial success came in 1976 with the Billboard No. 1 “Welcome Back,” written as the theme for Welcome Back, Kotter.
