Dhani Harrison and Nigel Godrich Form Dragonflies, Announce Debut Album
Composer Dhani Harrison, son of The Beatles legend George Harrison, and renowned producer Nigel Godrich have teamed up to form a new band called Dragonflies. The duo will release their self-titled debut studio album on September 18 via Dark Horse Records and BMG.
Alongside the announcement, the pair shared the album’s lead single, “Slower.” The track is accompanied by a RUFFMERCY-directed music video featuring hand-drawn animation of a person jogging through natural settings and an abandoned building. The album also features a percussion-based assist from Godrich’s Ultraísta and Atoms for Peace bandmate Joey Waronker.
How Dragonflies Came Together
The collaboration grew out of a connection made during the COVID-19 shutdown. Harrison reached out to Godrich for musical guidance while working on material that would become his 2023 sophomore solo album, Innerstanding. Those initial conversations led to studio sessions at Godrich’s Brixton studio, where the two built songs quickly and instinctively from tape loops.
“It’s like one person throwing something in the air and the other person catching it,” Godrich said in a statement regarding their creative process.
For Harrison, stepping into the project meant shifting his usual workflow. While he typically helms all of his own projects, he took on the role of singer and guitarist while Godrich shaped the material in real time.
“He’s a machine,” Harrison said. “He has strong opinions about what he wants to hear, and for me it’s very humbling. That’s why it’s such a new experience.”
The Origin of the Name and Full Tracklist
The band name came together serendipitously through Godrich. Harrison explained that dragonflies serve as a symbol of spiritual enlightenment, noting that whenever he sees one, it feels magical.
