Mark Knopfler

Mark Knopfler is a British guitarist, singer and songwriter born on 12 August 1949 in Glasgow, Scotland, to a Hungarian-born architect father and an English mother. The family moved to Newcastle upon Tyne when he was seven, and it was in that city's grammar school and later at the University of Leeds, where he earned an English degree, that he began playing guitar seriously while also working as a local newspaper reporter. Before forming his best-known band he passed through several short-lived groups, including Brewers Droop and a lecturing stint at a college in Essex, developing a fingerstyle technique influenced heavily by Chet Atkins.

In April 1977 Knopfler formed Dire Straits in London with his brother David on rhythm guitar, John Illsley on bass and Pick Withers on drums. The band's understated, pub-rock-adjacent sound stood apart from the punk scene of the era, and a demo session produced the songs that became their self-titled 1978 debut album. A Dutch radio hit for the single 'Sultans of Swing' turned the album into an international success and launched a recording career that would run for roughly two decades.

Across the 1980s Dire Straits released a string of albums that steadily built Knopfler's reputation as a distinctive lyrical guitarist and observational songwriter, including Communiqué, Making Movies and Love Over Gold. The band's commercial and creative peak came with 1985's Brothers in Arms, recorded at George Martin's studio in Montserrat, which sold more than 30 million copies worldwide, became an early flagship release for the compact disc format, and produced hit singles such as 'Money for Nothing' and 'Walk of Life'. A final studio album, On Every Street, followed in 1991 and was supported by an exhausting global tour; the strain of that scale of touring contributed to the band's dissolution, formally announced in 1995.

Alongside the band, Knopfler had already begun a parallel career as a film composer, scoring Local Hero in 1983 and following it with soundtracks for Cal, Comfort and Joy, The Princess Bride and several later films including Wag the Dog and Altamira. This soundtrack work let him explore more atmospheric, melodic material outside a rock-band format, and pieces such as the Local Hero theme became closely associated with his solo identity.

After Dire Straits ended, Knopfler began releasing music under his own name, starting with Golden Heart in 1996. Subsequent solo studio albums, among them Sailing to Philadelphia, Shangri-La, Kill to Get Crimson, Get Lucky, Privateering, Tracker, Down the Road Wherever and One Deep River, moved toward roots rock, Celtic and country-influenced material and were typically supported by extensive touring with a settled backing band. He also pursued collaborative projects during this period, recording the Grammy-winning duo album Neck and Neck with country guitarist Chet Atkins in 1990 and the acclaimed All the Roadrunning with Emmylou Harris in 2006, and he formed the roots-country side project the Notting Hillbillies in the late 1980s.

Knopfler's playing is widely recognised for its fingerstyle technique, played without a pick, which produces a warm, articulate tone rather than the more aggressive attack common in rock guitar. Critics and fellow musicians have repeatedly singled out his melodic phrasing and restraint, and he has been ranked among the greatest guitarists in surveys such as Rolling Stone's list of the 100 greatest guitarists.

Beyond his own recordings, Knopfler has worked extensively as a session player, producer and songwriter for other artists, contributing production to Bob Dylan's Infidels and Aztec Camera's Knife, and playing or writing for artists including Tina Turner, Bryan Ferry and Randy Travis. He toured as part of Bob Dylan's backing lineup in the early 2010s and has continued to record and perform steadily into the 2020s, running his own British Grove Studios in London.

Knopfler was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with Dire Straits in 2018, was appointed OBE in 2000, and has received multiple Grammy and BRIT Awards along with an Ivor Novello Lifetime Achievement honour. He announced what he described as his final large-scale tour in 2019, closing with a show at Madison Square Garden, while continuing to release new solo material afterward, including One Deep River in 2024.
