1955

1985

2017

74-year-old Gayla Peevey returned to Oklahoma City Zoo to welcome its newest hippopotamus. Her special appearance came more than sixty years after her iconic 1953 novelty hit, “I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas” launched a children’s fundraising campaign that secured $3,000 to buy the facility’s very first hippo. Rock history records that Peevey had previously stood in that exact zoo as a child in December, 1953 to greet that original Nile hippo, Mathilda, a full-circle moment for an artist whose signature track has since become a timeless holiday favorite.

2019

Jack Scott, who scored nine Billboard Top 40 hits between July 1958 and September, 1960, among them “My True Love” and “Burning Bridges”, died of congestive heart failure aged 83. 2020

Charley Pride, the African-American, Country singer who climbed to #21 on the Hot 100 in 1972 with “Kiss An Angel Good Mornin'”, died of complications from COVID-19 aged 86. Rock history records that Between 1967 and 1987, Pride enjoyed fifty-two Top 10 Country hits.

2025
