Big Thief Launch Free Grateful Dead-Inspired Live Archive
Big Thief has officially launched the Big Thief Live Archive, a new digital portal that hosts a free collection of concert recordings spanning the band’s recent and distant past.
The project draws direct inspiration from drummer James Krivchenia and his appreciation for the Grateful Dead’s extensive catalog of live albums. At launch, the archive features ten complete sets of live show recordings. To keep the platform active and expanding, the band announced that a new performance will be added on the second Tuesday of every month.
Inside the Archive Project
Detailing the motivation behind the portal, the band explained that they have consistently recorded their live shows since 2019. In a statement, the group noted that every concert holds a distinct energy, pointing out that their songs constantly evolve and sound different from night to night.
“We spend so much more time on the road than in studios, and so we felt a desire to create something that captures the ever-undulating aliveness of our music through time,” the folk-rockers shared. The Adrienne Lenker-fronted group also highlighted the interactive nature of the site, emphasizing that the recordings are entirely free and allow users to select individual tracks to build custom playlists.
Production and Recent Releases
The live material featured in the archive was captured directly on the road by front-of-house engineer Alice Wilder and monitor engineer Aleda Deroche. The mixing duties for the recordings were handled by Fabian Prynn, an in-house engineer for 4AD.
The launch follows the September 2025 release of the band’s latest studio full-length album, Double Infinity. Following that release, guitarist and backing vocalist Buck Meek hinted at further material already in the works, teasingly remarking that fans should wait until they hear the next record because it is not what they expect.
