Steve Vai

Steven Siro Vai was born on June 6, 1960, in Carle Place, New York, on Long Island. He showed an early interest in music, and after seeing a guitarist perform as a child he decided the instrument would be his own. He began formal guitar lessons in 1973 with a fellow Long Island teenager, Joe Satriani, and played in a series of local bands while still in high school.

In 1978 Vai enrolled at Berklee College of Music in Boston. During his time there he sent Frank Zappa a written transcription of Zappa's difficult composition "The Black Page" along with a tape of his own college band. Impressed, Zappa hired him, first as a music transcriptionist and copyist and later as a touring guitarist. Vai relocated to California and worked as a full member of Zappa's band from roughly 1980 to 1983, performing intricate, technically demanding guitar parts that Zappa is said to have described as his young player's specialty.

After leaving Zappa's band, Vai built a home studio and began releasing music independently, issuing his debut solo album, Flex-Able, in 1984 through his own small label. That same year he briefly joined the hard rock band Alcatrazz, replacing outgoing guitarist Yngwie Malmsteen, before leaving in 1985 to join David Lee Roth's newly formed solo band alongside bassist Billy Sheehan. Roth's band released the platinum-selling Eat 'Em and Smile in 1986 and the follow-up Skyscraper in 1988, both of which brought Vai wider visibility as a rock guitarist.

While with Roth, Vai worked with Ibanez to design a signature model, the JEM, released commercially in 1987; it became one of the longest-running signature guitars in the industry. In 1989 Vai joined Whitesnake, recording guitar parts for the multi-platinum album Slip of the Tongue before touring with the band into 1990. Around the same period he and Ibanez developed the Universe, generally regarded as the first mass-produced seven-string electric guitar, which he used on his own recordings and with Whitesnake.

Vai's second solo album, Passion and Warfare, was released in 1990 after several years of home-studio work and became one of the best-known instrumental rock albums of its era, earning strong reviews and industry awards and eventually selling well over a million copies worldwide. He followed it with Sex & Religion (1993), featuring vocalist Devin Townsend, the stripped-down EP Alien Love Secrets (1995), and the double album Fire Garden (1996), which combined instrumental and vocal material.

In 1996 Vai began the first G3 tour with fellow guitarists Joe Satriani and Eric Johnson, a package format built around individual sets followed by a group jam that has recurred periodically over the following decades with rotating lineups. His solo career continued through the 1990s and 2000s with albums including The Ultra Zone (1999) and Real Illusions: Reflections (2005), the first installment of a planned multi-album storyline. Across his career he has won three Grammy Awards for Best Rock Instrumental Performance and Best Pop Instrumental Album, drawn from work on Zappa's Universe, his live album No Substitutions: Live in Osaka, and the Zappa Plays Zappa touring project.

Beyond performing, Vai has been active as an educator, running touring masterclasses under names such as Alien Guitar Secrets and later the multi-day Vai Academy, and in 2011 he took part in a Guinness World Record attempt for the largest online guitar lesson in partnership with Berklee's online education arm. He also founded the Make a Noise Foundation to support music education, and he acted in and supplied guitar work for the 1986 film Crossroads, among other film and video-game contributions.

Vai continued releasing solo material into the 2010s and 2020s with The Story of Light (2012), Modern Primitive (2016), and Inviolate (2022), the last of which debuted at number one on Billboard's Current Hard Rock Albums chart. He has continued to tour extensively, including reunion G3 dates and joint touring with Satriani, and remains regarded as one of the most technically influential rock guitarists of his generation.
