Khruangbin

Khruangbin is an American instrumental trio from Houston, Texas, consisting of Laura Lee Ochoa (bass, vocals), Mark Speer (guitar, vocals), and Donald "DJ" Johnson (drums, vocals). The band's roots trace to 2004, when Speer and Johnson began playing together in the gospel band of Pastor Rudy Rasmus's St. John's Methodist Church in Houston, with Speer on guitar and Johnson on organ. Ochoa met Speer a few years later through a shared interest in global music and architecture, and the two began exploring music together while Ochoa learned to play bass.In 2010, Ochoa and Speer both joined a tour backing the musician Yppah, an experience that pushed them to start writing and recording original material together. They developed an early version of their sound at a barn in Burton, Texas, and Johnson was subsequently brought in on drums, completing the trio. The band's name, khruangbin, is the Thai word for "airplane"; Ochoa had encountered it while studying the Thai language, and the group adopted it as a nod to the far-flung, international mix of sounds that informs their music.That mix draws heavily on 1960s and '70s Thai funk and molam, alongside Iranian pop, Middle Eastern and South Asian music, dub, American soul, and surf guitar, filtered through the trio's own instrumental interplay. Across this period the trio also became known for a distinctive visual identity built around wigs, coordinated stage outfits, and a largely instrumental, groove-driven live show that toured major festivals including Glastonbury, Bonnaroo, and Austin City Limits.Khruangbin also pursued notable collaborations outside their core albums. With Texas singer Leon Bridges they released two EPs, Texas Sun (2020) and Texas Moon (2022), blending Bridges's soul vocals with the trio's instrumental sound to strong commercial and critical reception. In 2022 they released Ali, a full album with Malian guitarist Vieux Farka Touré built from covers and reinterpretations of songs by his father, the noted Malian musician Ali Farka Touré, further reflecting the band's ongoing engagement with West African and global musical traditions.The band continued to release additional live recordings and remix or compilation projects through the early 2020s, including entries in the Late Night Tales series and various live album releases documenting their concerts. In 2024 they released their fifth studio album, A La Sala, on Dead Oceans, which charted well internationally and was followed by the band's nomination for the Grammy Award for Best New Artist that November — a distinction unusual for a group nearly a decade into its recording career, reflecting how much broader Khruangbin's audience had grown by the mid-2020s.In 2025, to mark the tenth anniversary of their debut, the band released The Universe Smiles Upon You ii, a re-recorded and reimagined version of that first album. Across more than a decade together, Khruangbin has built a catalog defined by its patient, groove-centered instrumental writing and its deliberate blending of musical traditions from Thailand to Texas, while maintaining the same three-person lineup since Johnson joined in 2010.
