1952 At Atlantic Records in New York, Ahmet Ertegun began recording 21-year-old Ray Charles, who cut four songs including “The Sun’s Gonna Shine Again.”
1956 Police broke up a rowdy crowd after a showing of Rock Around the Clock at a London cinema, and the film was soon banned in several English cities.
1962 The Beatles recorded “P.S. I Love You” at Abbey Road. Producer George Martin also hired Andy White to re-record “Love Me Do,” while Ringo Starr played tambourine on that version.

1956 Screamin’ Jay Hawkins re-recorded “I Put a Spell on You” for Columbia’s Okeh label. The outrageous performance later sold more than a million copies and became one of the songs recognized as shaping rock and roll.
1964 Manfred Mann’s “Do Wah Diddy Diddy” entered the Billboard Top 40 and later reached No. 1.
1966 The Monkees television series premiered on NBC, built around the madcap style of The Beatles’ A Hard Day’s Night.
1969 The Rolling Stones released Through the Past, Darkly. It reached No. 2 in both the United States and Britain and later went Platinum in America.

1975 Thin Lizzy released Fighting, their first album to chart in Britain.
1980 David Bowie released Scary Monsters (and Super Creeps), which reached No. 1 in Britain and No. 12 in America.
1987 Michael Jackson’s Bad debuted at No. 1 in Britain as he began his first solo world tour in Yokohama, Japan.
2003 Johnny Cash died at 71. The Man in Black was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1992 and recorded landmark live albums at Folsom and San Quentin prisons.
2007 Surviving Led Zeppelin members announced a one-night reunion at London’s O2 Arena to honor Ahmet Ertegun; more than 20 million people sought tickets.

1958 Cliff Richard made his British television debut on Oh Boy!, performing “Move It,” which later reached No. 2 in Britain.
1962 Ringo Starr’s first wife, Maureen, gave birth to their son Zak Starkey, who later became a drummer with The Who and Ringo’s All-Starr Band.
