Rock History: August 26

Notable rock and roll birthdays, releases, and milestones that happened on August 26 throughout history.

1963

Paul McCartney was fined £25 and lost his driver’s licence for a year after being caught speeding. Additional penalties for failing to produce his documents brought the total to £31; police had stopped him while he was driving the Beatles back to Liverpool after a show.

1967

Jimi Hendrix’s “Purple Haze” entered the Billboard Hot 100 at No. 94 and eventually peaked at No. 65, although it did much better in Britain at No. 3. Billboard later ranked it No. 17 on its list of the 500 greatest songs.

1967

The Beatles held a widely publicized press conference with Maharishi Mahesh Yogi in Bangor, Wales, announcing their commitment to his Spiritual Regeneration Movement and their decision to give up hallucinogenic drugs.

1968

Apple released The Beatles’ “Hey Jude” backed with “Revolution” in America. It became their biggest hit, spending nine weeks at No. 1 on the Hot 100, reaching the top of 23 charts worldwide, and selling more than eight million copies.

1969

Johnny Cash and The Tennessee Three played their first Minnesota State Fair show, performing a 19-song set that included “Ring of Fire,” “I Walk the Line,” “Folsom Prison Blues,” and “A Boy Named Sue.”

1970

Jimi Hendrix hosted the opening party for Electric Lady Studios in New York, attended by Eric Clapton, Steve Winwood, Ron Wood, and a young Patti Smith. Hendrix left for England that night and died before he could return to record in the studio he had helped create.

1972

Looking Glass topped the Hot 100 with “Brandy,” which also earned a British Gold certification despite reaching only No. 51 there. The million-selling American hit was followed by just one more Billboard entry, “Jimmy Loves Mary-Anne.”

1973

Bobby Darin gave what proved to be his final concert at the Las Vegas Hilton. Bandmates recalled that he took repeated false exits so he could briefly use an oxygen mask backstage; he died after heart surgery four months later at 37.

1978

Frankie Valli returned to No. 1 nearly 16 years after “Sherry” with the title song from “Grease.” The single sold more than two million copies in the U.S. and reached No. 3 in Britain.

1989

Don Henley’s “The End of the Innocence,” co-written and co-produced with Bruce Hornsby, peaked at No. 8 on the Hot 100. It earned Grammy nominations and won Henley the 1990 award for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance.

2003

Rolling Stone named Jimi Hendrix the greatest guitarist in rock history, with Duane Allman, B.B. King, Eric Clapton, Robert Johnson, Chuck Berry, and Stevie Ray Vaughan also appearing in the Top Ten.

2007

The Rolling Stones concluded their two-year A Bigger Bang tour at London’s O2 Arena. The trek grossed a record-setting $558 million.

2010

EMI confirmed that Iron Maiden’s “The Final Frontier” debuted at No. 1 in 21 countries, following the same top international-chart debut for “A Matter of Life and Death” nearly four years earlier.

2025

Stewart Copeland and Andy Summers of The Police reportedly sued Sting and Magnetic Publishing over co-writing credit for “Every Breath You Take.” Summers said he created the song’s distinctive guitar part, while reports estimated Sting’s annual royalties at $745,000.
