Sam Cooke, Lou Rawls and other musicians were injured in a car crash near Marion, Arkansas; driver Edward Cunningham died, and Rawls spent six days in a coma and a year recovering. Beechnut gum sales doubled after sponsoring “American Bandstand.” Conway Twitty’s “It’s Only Make Believe” topped the US, UK and Canadian charts and sold more than eight million copies. Frank Ifield’s “Lovesick Blues” became his second UK No. 1 and reached No. 44 in the US.

1967–1975
The Moody Blues released “Nights in White Satin,” initially No. 19 in Britain and No. 103 in the US before its 1972 reissue became an American No. 2 and Gold record. Grace Slick caused controversy on “The Smothers Brothers Show” by appearing in blackface and giving a Black Power salute. Eddie Kendricks earned his only solo US Pop No. 1 with “Keep On Truckin’.” Elton John’s “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road” topped the album chart for eight weeks and included “Bennie and the Jets” and “Candle in the Wind.” The Edmund Fitzgerald sank in a Lake Superior storm with all 29 crew members lost; Gordon Lightfoot later wrote his hit ballad about it. The Eagles’ “Heartache Tonight” topped the Hot 100.

1985–2024
Bruce Springsteen released the five-record “Live/1975–85” set. Culture Club reunited, Elvis Presley received the Presidential Medal of Freedom posthumously, the Beatles’ “Now and Then” renewed catalog interest, a Michael Jackson jacket sold at auction, Christmas songs returned to the singles chart and “Thriller” charted across six decades.
