Journey guitarist Neal Schon is facing a critical deadline this week regarding his potential offshoot project, Journey Beyond. Nearly six months have passed since Schon received a notice of allowance to trademark the name, and failing to meet the upcoming cutoff could force him to restart the entire application process.

According to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, Schon must file a statement of use or an extension request within six months of the March 24, 2026, notice of allowance issuance date. That deadline arrives this Thursday, Sept. 24. If the deadline passes without action, the application will be considered abandoned.

Schon’s attorneys retain the option to file an extension request if they can prove any delay was unintentional, though additional application fees would apply. While extensions can be filed every six months, they are capped at five times before the application becomes completely voided.

Origins and Expansion of Journey Beyond

The trademark application procedure initially began on April 10, 2025. While the earliest paperwork indicated the mark was intended solely for sound recordings and video releases, updated filings later confirmed ambitions to take Journey Beyond on the road alongside related merchandise including shirts, sweatshirts, hats, and socks.

Whispers surrounding the project began soon after Schon posted a bare-bones image bearing the words “Journey Beyond” days after his initial contact with the Patent and Trademark Office. He followed up by using the phrase in hashtags and later posting a detailed logo in August 2025 with the caption “into the future.” When Rolling Stone asked whether Journey would evolve into the offshoot group, Schon stated, “Well, who knows? Nothing is set in stone right now until I actually get there.”
