Dave Grohl Recalls Instant Bond With Taylor Hawkins
Foo Fighters kicked off a weeklong residency on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Monday night (October 26th) by performing “Window” from their album Your Favorite Toy. Following the performance, frontman Dave Grohl sat down for an extended interview with Jimmy Kimmel, touching on the inspiration behind the song and sharing memories about the late drummer Taylor Hawkins.
Writing ‘Window’ and Meeting Taylor Hawkins
Grohl explained that “Window” was written with his 17-year-old daughter Harper in mind as she was learning the bass, wanting a simple track they could jam to together. Channeling his appreciation for the Breeders, Grohl noted the song’s lyrics were inspired by hotel room stays and the realization that window cleaners witness people’s most intimate moments.
Shifting gears to rock history, Grohl reflected on first meeting Hawkins at a 1995 KROQ Almost Acoustic Christmas event where Kimmel worked at the time. Hawkins was then drumming for Alanis Morissette. Backstage, a blond, surfer-dude Hawkins approached Grohl to praise the band, prompting Grohl to instantly realize, “Oh, we’re gonna be best friends for the rest of our lives.”
Alanis Morissette’s Prediction
Grohl recalled that Morissette seemed to sense the brewing friendship between the two musicians. According to Grohl, Morissette later asked Hawkins on a flight after a gig in France, “What are you going to do when Dave asks you to be the drummer?” While Hawkins officially joined the Foo Fighters within half a year, Grohl fondly remembered his initial reaction to Morissette at the time: “No, baby, I love you.”
The band’s current lineup features Grohl alongside guitarists Chris Shiflett and Pat Smear, bassist Nate Mendel, percussionist and keyboardist Rami Jaffee, and new drummer Ilan Rubin as they continue global tour dates.
