Unseen 1978 David Bowie Tour Footage to Become Immersive Berlin Experience
Unseen concert footage captured during David Bowie’s 1978 Isolar II World Tour will premiere as an immersive live experience next year. Titled Stage, the production is set to debut on Valentine’s Day at Berlin’s Uber Arena during the Berlin Film Festival.
Inside the Immersive Bowie Production
Filmmaker Brett Morgen discovered the previously unseen footage while working on his documentary Moonage Daydream, utilizing 35mm film from the 1978 tour. The presentation will feature large-scale projections across three screens alongside transparent LED displays. Lighting designer Patrick Woodroffe, known for his work with the Rolling Stones and Elton John, crafted the visual setup. Meanwhile, Academy Award-winning audio engineer Paul Massey mixed the concert audio using 7.1 surround sound and spatial audio design.
Morgen collaborated on the project alongside Bowie’s estate, the Berlinale, and Rob Hallett’s Wonderworld. The filmmaker is also slated to appear as a headlining speaker around that time at the Berlinale’s European Film Market.
The Legacy of the 1978 Isolar II Tour
Bowie launched his Isolar II World Tour in March 1978, completing 78 concerts across North America, Europe, Oceania, and Asia before wrapping up that December. The setlists heavily spotlighted material from his Berlin Trilogy albums, Low and Heroes, alongside songs from The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars, Station to Station, Young Americans, and Aladdin Sane.
Recordings from the 1978 trek previously formed his 1978 live album Stage—released while the tour was still underway—and later emerged on the 2018 archival release Welcome to the Blackout (Live London ’78). Bowie did not embark on another full-scale tour until 1983.
Berlin Premiere and Bowie80 Celebrations
The Berlin premiere ties into Bowie’s deep historical connection to the German city, serving as his muse during a period of recovery and reinvention. The event forms part of broader “Bowie80” celebrations honoring the artist in the year he would have marked his 80th birthday. Tickets for the single-night screening at the Uber Arena go on sale starting October 28th at 9 a.m. local time.
