Dave Grohl Broke Down in Tears After Playing With AC/DC
Dave Grohl has admitted that performing onstage with AC/DC left him an emotional wreck, breaking down in tears after stepping off the stage.
The Foo Fighters frontman joined the legendary Aussie rockers last month when his band stepped in to play two dates after support act The Pretty Reckless were forced to drop out. Grohl’s guest appearance took place during the second of these shows at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, where he joined the band to play “Highway To Hell.”
A Full-Circle Rock ‘n’ Roll Moment
Reflecting on the experience during an interview with New Zealand radio station The Rock, Grohl described the overwhelming reaction he had as soon as he walked off the stage.
“It was so crazy because my wife was on the side of the stage,” Grohl said. “We played Highway To Hell. I walked off stage, and I broke down in tears, sobbing like a baby. I was sobbing, like wailing, sobbing, and I couldn’t believe it. I was, like, ‘That is one of the most full-circle moments of my entire life,’ and I will never forget it.”
The Childhood Inspiration Behind the Music
For Grohl, the collaboration carried decades of personal history. He explained that one of his most formative musical experiences happened when he was 11 years old and watched AC/DC’s 1980 concert documentary, Let There Be Rock.
“Watching a band go on stage and just destroy the stage and equipment and themselves for an hour and a half…” Grohl recalled. “I didn’t know that’s how you play rock’n’roll. I thought rock’n’roll was like Beatles and Kiss and things like that. I’d never seen someone so drenched in sweat that they needed an oxygen tank. I was, like, ‘That’s what I wanna be when I grow up. I wanna be that guy.'”
Following their dates with AC/DC, Foo Fighters are set to embark on their stadium tour of Australia this week, with upcoming stops spanning New Zealand, India, and South America into early next year.
