Standing on a chair to reach the microphone, he sang Red Foley’s “Old Shep” a cappella, finished fifth, and received five dollars in ride tickets that he promptly used despite his mother’s objections.
1957 Pat Boone, 23, began hosting The Pat Boone Chevy Showroom on ABC. The musical-variety program welcomed many leading recording stars but ended after three seasons when it lost its ratings contest with NBC’s Bachelor Father; ABC replaced it with My Three Sons.

1978 Aerosmith offered to post bail for concertgoers arrested on marijuana and other minor charges at the Fort Wayne Coliseum. As many as 28 fans accepted, and the band’s tour accountant ultimately paid approximately $4,200 in bail and fines through separate court appearances.
1980 Paul Simon’s film One Trick Pony opened in U.S. theaters and became a critical and financial disappointment, earning under $150,000 against a budget of roughly $8 million. Its soundtrack fared better: the title song reached No. 40 and “Late in the Evening” climbed to No. 6.
1981 During Saturday Night Live’s season premiere, Rod Stewart brought out Tina Turner for an energetic duet on his 1978 hit “Hot Legs.” Stewart used the national appearance to highlight Turner’s solo potential while her career was rebuilding after her divorce.
1987 Lithonia, Georgia, proclaimed Brenda Lee Day and named a street for its hometown star, born Brenda Mae Tarpley. Lee placed 29 songs in Billboard’s Top 40 between 1960 and 1967, including “Sweet Nothin’s,” “I’m Sorry,” “Fool #1,” and “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree.”
1988 Twenty-year-old Lisa Marie Presley married musician Danny Keough. They had two children, Riley and Benjamin, before divorcing in May 1994, and remained close friends and committed co-parents afterward.
1992 Sinéad O’Connor ended her Saturday Night Live performance by tearing up a photograph of Pope John Paul II and urging viewers to “fight the real enemy,” an unscripted protest against abuse in the Catholic Church. She had concealed the plan during rehearsal, and the broadcast prompted thousands of complaints, a lifetime ban from SNL, and years of controversy before the moment was later restored to…
1999 Tom Jones returned to No. 1 on Britain’s album chart with Reload. At 59 he became the oldest performer to top the UK ranking with newly recorded material; the album sold more than six million copies worldwide, and Jones broke his own age record with Surrounded by Time in 2021 at 80.

1961 Bob Dylan gave his first ticketed concert at Carnegie Chapter Hall, a small recital room above Carnegie Hall. Promoter Izzy Young drew only 53 people—mostly Dylan’s friends and folk-scene colleagues—at two dollars each, leaving Dylan with $10 instead of the promised $20 fee.
1961 The Alvin Show, built around the Chipmunks, premiered on CBS after the novelty act scored hits with “The Chipmunk Song,” “Alvin’s Harmonica,” and “Ragtime Cowboy Joe.” It failed in prime time after one season but found a successful second life in Saturday-morning reruns through 1965.
1963 Billboard reported that hot-rod records were replacing surf songs as the latest teenage trend, with the Beach Boys’ “Little Deuce Coupe” at No. 15. Because automotive slang varied by region, Capitol supplied disc jockeys and retailers with a special glossary of hot-rod terminology.
1963 Sixteen-year-old Anthony “Top” Topham left the Yardbirds amid parental concern and uncertainty about abandoning art school, and 18-year-old Eric Clapton took his place. Topham later worked as a designer, painter, and musician before rejoining the group from 2013 to 2015.
1963 The Beatles made their first appearance on Britain’s Ready Steady Go!, where Dusty Springfield interviewed them. Wearing their grey collarless suits, they mimed “Twist and Shout,” “I’ll Get You,” and “She Loves You” as Springfield’s solo career was beginning with “I Only Want to Be with You.”
1965 Johnny Cash was arrested in El Paso after returning from Mexico with prescription amphetamines and sedatives concealed in his guitar case. He spent the night in custody, paid a $1,000 fine, and received a suspended 30-day sentence.
1966 Bobby Hebb received a Gold record for “Sunny,” a No. 2 U.S. and No. 12 UK hit. He wrote the hopeful song after the devastating day in November 1963 when President John F. Kennedy was assassinated and Hebb’s brother Harold was killed outside a Nashville nightclub.
1968 Cream opened its farewell tour at the Alameda County Coliseum in Oakland. The Eric Clapton, Ginger Baker, and Jack Bruce trio began its final run while “White Room” was climbing toward No. 6, following the earlier No. 5 success of “Sunshine of Your Love.”
1969 Abbey Road entered the British album chart at No. 1 and remained there for eleven weeks. The final album recorded by the Beatles became one of their two biggest UK sellers, rivaling Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.
1969 Creedence Clearwater Revival began a four-week run atop Billboard’s album chart with Green River, its first No. 1 LP. Featuring “Bad Moon Rising” and the title track, it later placed No. 95 on Rolling Stone’s 2003 list of the 500 greatest albums.
1970 Janis Joplin died from a heroin overdose at Hollywood’s Landmark Hotel at 27, only days after recording what became her greatest hit. “Me and Bobby McGee” reached No. 1 posthumously in early 1971, surpassing her previous peak with Big Brother and the Holding Company’s “Piece of My Heart.”
1973 The BBC broadcast the 500th edition of Top of the Pops with Slade, Gary Glitter, and the Osmonds among the acts. The Who broke the program’s miming rules and smashed a guitar onstage, an act that earned the band a lifetime ban from the show.

1959 MGM released Girls Town, starring Mamie Van Doren, Mel Tormé, and Ray Anthony. Paul Anka made his acting debut and performed four songs, including “Lonely Boy” and “It’s Time to Cry,” while the Platters appeared in a nightclub scene singing “Wish It Were Me.”
1959 Bobby Darin’s “Mack the Knife” began a six-week run at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. The recording won Grammys for Record of the Year and Best New Artist and later ranked No. 251 on Rolling Stone’s 2003 list of the 500 greatest songs.

1965 Henry Mancini’s soundtrack for The Pink Panther was certified Gold after selling 500,000 copies. The No. 8 album spent 41 weeks on Billboard’s LP chart, won three Grammys, and entered the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2001.
