Iron Maiden’s Run For Your Lives 50th anniversary tour finally touched down in the U.S. last night (Sept. 5) at Sports Illustrated Stadium in Harrison, New Jersey. Playing back-to-back dates in a soccer stadium holding around 25,000 fans marks a massive venue scale for the metal legends, especially compared to their early 2000s theater runs.
Celebrating half a century of heavy metal, the band leaned heavily into their classic period of records spanning from 1980’s self-titled debut to 1992’s Fear of the Dark. It serves up the hits and deep cuts fans have long yearned for, arriving at the perfect time in the band’s storied career.
New Drummer Simon Dawson Steps In
Following Nicko McBrain’s decades-long tenure and his inspiring return on The Future Past trek after suffering a stroke, Simon Dawson has taken over behind the kit. Stepping into McBrain’s shoes is an emotional milestone for fans accustomed to the pop and swing of McBrain’s style.
Bruce Dickinson previously noted that Dawson’s playing is more reminiscent of Clive Burr, who drummed on Maiden’s first three LPs. Dawson’s heavy-handed downbeats return the band to a more physical, power-driven attack. While apprehension is natural with such a significant lineup change, Dawson’s tension-laden drum fills and tricks fit the material naturally without missing a beat.
Video Wall Replaces Physical Backdrops
After decades of relying on a dozen-plus physical backdrops, Iron Maiden finally embraced a modern video effects wall for the 50th-anniversary run. While the band has long resisted changing their tried-and-true stage formulas, the visual upgrade provides a ridiculously refreshing shift.
Rather than adopting a KISS-level pyro production, the band utilized the video wall to selectively enhance the storytelling of their catalog. The visuals remained subtle and static during smaller moments, but offered dramatic effect during epics like "Rime of the Ancient Mariner." During "Killers," the screens brought fans right into a subway alley where an axe-wielding Eddie lurked.
