Frank Zappa released more than 60 albums during his lifetime, blending rock, jazz, classical composition, and satire into a body of work that resists easy categorization. Fiercely independent, he ran his own record labels for much of his career to maintain creative control, and he was known as a demanding bandleader who required his musicians to be technically excellent across multiple genres. Beyond his own recordings, Zappa became an outspoken advocate for free speech in music, testifying before the US Senate in 1985 against proposed record labeling legislation — a stance that cemented his reputation as one of rock’s most fiercely independent voices, respected by musicians across genres for both his musicianship and his refusal to compromise.
