Noel Gallagher Epiphone Guitar Fetches £12,000 at Oasis Auction
A guitar originally belonging to Noel Gallagher has pulled in £12,000 at a recent Oasis memorabilia auction in Worcestershire. The striking Manchester City blue limited-edition Epiphone guitar was one of several items put up for sale by the son of Huw Richards, a former front-of-house sound engineer for the band.
The History Behind the Guitar and Consignment
Manufactured in 1997, the Epiphone guitar is believed to be one of just five identical instruments sent to Gallagher by the manufacturer. According to Littleton Auctions, the instrument was later gifted to Richards. Alongside the guitar, a Kangol rain jacket produced for the band’s touring personnel brought in £2,000. Additional items from the Richards collection, including tour itineraries, promotional material, and a Be Here Now wristwatch, also found buyers at the event.
Elsewhere in the collection, a set of 11 framed platinum discs presented by Creation Records to celebrate UK sales of (What’s the Story) Morning Glory? exceeding 3.3 million copies also sold for £2,000.
Rare Tickets, Demos, and Unsold Lots
Outside of the Richards family consignment, other pieces of Oasis history changed hands. A rare original concert ticket for The Rain—the precursor band that eventually became Oasis—commanded £2,400. An early demo tape also sold, fetching £3,600.
However, not every high-profile item successfully crossed the block. A baby grand piano that originally appeared in the artwork for the “Supersonic” single failed to sell. That piece carried an estimated pre-auction value between £100,000 and £150,000.
Injunction Halts Tape Archive Sale
The most substantial lot slated for the auction—an archive consisting of over 100 old Oasis recordings expected to fetch £1.6 million—was pulled from the event entirely after the band filed a legal injunction.
Addressing the sudden removal, Owain Richards stated, “It is true that Oasis have sued me and my father to try to prevent the auction of the tapes made by my father many years ago.”
Richards added, “We have agreed to postpone the auction (of the tapes) to enable the legal dispute to be resolved either by litigation or otherwise in an orderly way.”
