Rush Postpone San Jose Show After Drummer Anika Nilles Falls Ill
Rock legends Rush have been forced to postpone their San Jose show, which was set to take place on October 17th at the SAP Centre, after their drummer fell ill.
The band announced that the show would not go ahead only hours before doors were scheduled to open. Guitarist Alex Lifeson delivered a personal video message to fans on social media, revealing that drummer Anika Nilles had fallen sick.
Alex Lifeson Shares Update on Anika Nilles
According to Lifeson, Nilles initially began feeling unwell during the band’s first San Jose show on October 15th. Despite entering the early stages of the flu, she managed to push through the gig.
"So this really sucks," Lifeson said in the video message, calling her ability to finish the opening performance "really quite incredible and a testament to her willpower."
He continued, "Over the last couple of days she’s gotten a lot worse, and unfortunately we’re gonna have to cancel the show tonight. It’s a real bummer." He added, "We’re crestfallen. We were really looking forward to it, but it is what it is."
Reschedule Date and Tour Context
Looking ahead, Lifeson expressed hope that Nilles would recover within four or five days. The band intends to return for a make-up gig on December 6th.
"Again, really, really sorry. These things happen. It’s flu season. We’ll do our best to get back in shape and return and put on a fabulous show for all of you. Thank you so much for understanding," Lifeson added.
The current tour marks Rush’s first outing since 2015. Nilles joined surviving members Geddy Lee and Lifeson for the trek, stepping in to perform following the passing of original drummer Neil Peart in 2020.
