Sheryl Crow Announces New Album Pick You Up & Freedom Bus

Sheryl Crow has officially announced the details of her upcoming 12th studio album, Pick You Up. Set for release on October 9 digitally, with physical editions following on November 20, the upcoming record spans seven tracks created alongside her longtime collaborator Jeff Trott.

Alongside the announcement, the Rock & Roll Hall of Famer has dropped the album’s closing track, "Freedom Bus," which features singer-songwriter Jesse Welles. The protest-leaning single prompts listeners to reflect on history when considering the future and individual accountability. In the track, Crow sings, "What if everyone took a civics class?/I’m not sure I know anyone who’d pass/But how we live today comes from the past/If we forget, it could slip from our grasp."

The Meaning Behind ‘Pick You Up’

Reflecting on "Freedom Bus," Crow emphasized the weight of civic responsibility in a statement. She shared that she does not take freedom lightly, noting that it has been paid for in the lives of others throughout history. She added that our dialogue and capacity to disagree must honor the blood, sweat, and tears of those who fought to ensure every person was created equal under the constitution.

Thematically, the broader seven-track record circles around themes of hope, unity, and human connection amidst widespread societal chaos. Describing the project, Crow likened the songs to a comforting presence during difficult times.

"Each of these songs are a commentary on being human and wanting connection," Crow said. "There is a lot of chaos all around us and I definitely find myself feeling alone. My wish is that whoever hears these songs feels the hope I feel when I sing them! I hope these songs feel like a soothing moisturizer on our chapped hearts."
