Why Steven Wilson’s First Solo Tour Was a Massive Financial Gamble
When Steven Wilson prepared for his debut solo tour in 2011, he faced a massive financial gamble. Having recently placed Porcupine Tree on the backburner, relocated out of London, and spent three years remastering the King Crimson catalogue, Wilson was charting entirely new creative and professional territory.
The King Crimson Influence and Stripping Down
His second solo album, Grace For Drowning, was heavily shaped by his forensic deep-dive into King Crimson’s master tapes. Working on those records fundamentally changed how he viewed production, steering him away from the multi-tracked wall of sound he favored in the late ’80s.
“When Robert Fripp’s playing on those early Crimson records, it’s one guitar single-tracked – but it sounds monolithic,” Wilson explained. He applied this philosophy to Grace For Drowning by stripping away unnecessary multi-tracking to let instrument tones breathe. Notably, heavy guitars are scarce on the record; instead, the heaviest musical moments come from textures like double-tracked baritone saxophones driving the main riff of ‘Raider II.’
Lyrically, the album leans into personal melancholy, featuring contributions from notable players including Genesis guitarist Steve Hackett, who guest-starred on ‘Deform To Form A Star.’
Proving It Wasn’t Just a Side Project
Taking the new material on the road carried steep financial stakes. Just twelve months after Porcupine Tree sold out the Royal Albert Hall for the conclusion of The Incident tour, Wilson booked a more modest scale for his solo outing, kicking off with a UK date at the Shepherds Bush Empire.
“In this business brand name is everything,” Wilson noted, pointing out that casual listeners often buy records based on radio play or retail placement rather than tracking individual band members. Citing a stark cautionary example, he added, “Just ask Roger Waters – he found out the hard way when he left Pink Floyd!”
To combat any assumption that the venture was a casual sideline, Wilson backed the tour with an elaborate multimedia production. “I guess I’m overcompensating for the fact some people might think this is a side project,” he said. “It isn’t – it’s as epic as anything I’ve done with any of my bands.”
