ZZ Top: Upcoming album will feature late Dusty Hill songs!
Billy Gibbons, the lead singer of ZZ Top, recently divulged information about the band’s forthcoming album, disclosing that it will encompass songs featuring both the departed Dusty Hill and his replacement, Elwood Francis, on bass.
ZZ Top’s upcoming album, succeeding their 2012 release “La Futura,” was already underway when Hill tragically passed away in July 2021. In a recent interview with Classic Rock, Gibbons expressed optimism that the new record could be unveiled this year, despite initial estimates pointing towards a late 2021 or 2022 timeframe.
Gibbons stated, “Is the business thriving? Absolutely. At the moment, we are evaluating the tracks that we believe require final touches. Dusty appears on some of them, as does Elwood. What’s intriguing is that we have three or four tracks featuring both of them. They complement each other’s styles. The only difference is that Dusty, who played with his fingers, possessed a slightly warmer tone.”
He also paid tribute to his departed bandmate, characterizing him as a “remarkable individual” and acknowledging the sturdy foundation Dusty provided for his guitar solos. Gibbons reminisced, “When I soloed, I never had to worry about anything else because Dusty was always on point… Dusty used to say, ‘If I’m ever late on stage, give my instrument to Elwood.’ Elwood is part of the family; he has been with us for three decades.”
Gibbons admitted that it was arduous to return to the stage shortly after Hill’s passing, with Elwood Francis, the band’s bass technician, stepping in alongside Gibbons and drummer Frank Beard. However, he expressed contentment that everything is currently progressing “exceedingly well.”
ZZ Top’s forthcoming album guarantees a distinctive fusion of contributions from both Dusty Hill and Elwood Francis, honoring the late bassist’s legacy while embracing the band’s ongoing musical odyssey. Fans can eagerly anticipate the release of this highly awaited record, anxiously awaiting the unique sounds and collaboration between these talented musicians.
