Dave Grohl and Johnny Depp Join Aerosmith for Star-Studded L.A. Show
Aerosmith kicked off the first of two Hollywood Bowl shows with a star-studded lineup featuring Foo Fighters’ Dave Grohl on drums and actor-musician Johnny Depp, alongside a 27-song set filled with guest performers and tribute acts.
Dave Grohl on Drums and Johnny Depp Appearance
Dave Grohl sat in on drums for the first five of Aerosmith’s six songs. Longtime drummer Joey Kramer then returned to his role for the final track of the night, “Walk This Way.” Touring drummer John Douglas also played on a second kit alongside Kramer.
Grohl powered the rhythm section for the opening tracks “Toys in the Attic” and “Back in the Saddle.” Alicia Silverstone and Liv Tyler, who both starred in Aerosmith’s “Crazy” video, introduced the band before the performance. Grohl also remained on board for “Sweet Emotion” and “Dream On,” the latter featuring Steven Tyler at the piano after a video montage.
Right before the final song, Aerosmith welcomed Johnny Depp—Joe Perry’s bandmate in Hollywood Vampires—to join the group on stage for “The Train Kept a-Rollin’.” Steven Tyler introduced Depp by asking, “Johnny, does this sound familiar?” before blowing into his harmonica.
Star-Studded Tributes and Guest Sets
Before Aerosmith’s headlining six-song run, several acts paid tribute to the Boston rockers across a 27-song overall set. Godsmack’s Sully Erna opened the night with “Make It” and “Lightning Strikes,” followed by Gov’t Mule’s Warren Haynes on “Lord of the Thighs” and “Walkin’ the Dog.” Billy Idol and guitarist Steve Stevens then led a performance of “Livin’ on the Edge.”
The lineup continued with Sammy Hagar tackling “Draw the Line” and “Helter Skelter,” and Heart’s Wilson sisters performing “Never Loved a Man” and “Janie’s Got a Gun.” Country star Eric Church played “Rag Doll” and “I Don’t Want To Miss a Thing.”
Extended sets preceded Aerosmith’s finale. The Black Crowes delivered a five-song set featuring “Let the Music Do the Talking,” “Write Me a Letter,” “Combination,” “No More No More,” and “Chip Away the Stone.” Guns N’ Roses closed out the guest performances with “Nobody’s Fault,” “Last Child,” “Seasons of Wither,” “Welcome to the Jungle,” and “Paradise City.”
