Geddy Lee & Alex Lifeson Pay Tribute to Neil Peart at Film Premiere

Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson paid tribute to late Rush drummer Neil Peart at the premiere of a new documentary chronicling his life and legacy. The surviving band members appeared onstage alongside Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith at the Princess of Wales Theatre for the debut of Neil Peart: No One’s Disciple at the Toronto International Film Festival.

Addressing the audience ahead of the screening, Geddy Lee highlighted the personal depth the film uncovers beyond Peart’s legendary musical prowess. “Tonight you’re gonna see a very interesting look at this guy that you think you know,” Lee told the crowd. “And you’re gonna see the depth of his musical legacy, and you’re gonna learn about friendship and how it runs both ways between the people he loved in the drum community and how they loved him back.”

Alex Lifeson echoed his bandmate’s sentiments, emphasizing Peart’s lesser-known personal qualities. “He encapsulated everything about the film, what an amazing person was,” Lifeson said. “There’s a whole side of him that a lot of you don’t really know. He was very, very funny. He was a sweet friend, and he was extremely loyal.”

Star-Studded Collaboration and Broadcast Plans

Neil Peart: No One’s Disciple was directed by Scot McFadyen and Sam Dunn, the filmmaking team behind the acclaimed 2010 Rush documentary Beyond The Lighted Stage, as well as Iron Maiden: Flight 666 and the Metal Evolution series. The documentary features interviews with Lee and Lifeson alongside performances of Rush classics featuring an elite roster of guest drummers, including Chad Smith, Stewart Copeland of The Police, Danny Carey of Tool, and Gavin Harrison of King Crimson and Porcupine Tree.

The film is scheduled to air on Canada’s CBC network on September 23 as part of The Passionate Eye documentary series.
