Pearl Jam Update: Jeff Ament Shares News On Writing New Material
Pearl Jam bassist Jeff Ament has offered a hopeful update on the band’s creative front, revealing that members are actively working on new music following their recent global touring cycle.
Writing Apart, Coming Together
Speaking in a conversation with Rolling Stone, Ament addressed the band’s plans for new material. “I think everybody’s writing, but we haven’t really written a whole bunch of stuff together. But a couple of things that we have done are really good,” he shared.
Ament also expressed enthusiasm about returning to the creative process after some downtime, adding, “And that’s a powerful thing, the time apart you sort of sit with, ‘Oh, shit, I can’t wait to do this. I’m chomping at the bit.’” However, the bassist tempered expectations for an immediate release, stating that hearing any new music will take “at least a few months.”
Lineup Changes and Live Returns
The band’s 2026 schedule has remained relatively quiet, marked by their live comeback at the end of September at the Ohana Festival. Those festival performances served as Pearl Jam’s first live sets following the departure of long-serving drummer Matt Cameron.
For the Ohana shows, Paul McCartney longtime drummer Abe Laboriel Jr. stepped behind the kit. Discussing how the collaboration came together prior to the festival, Ament said, “Well, it was the first name that came up that we all went, ‘Well, in our minds, let’s start at the top.’” He added, “I hope this is our guy, but I don’t know if it is. We haven’t played a show yet, so it’s pretty hard to be fully committed to…”
Following the performances, frontman Eddie Vedder took to social media to praise the guest drummer. “Also wanted to extend our further appreciation to Abe Laboriel Jr sitting in on drums for PJ. It was a joy to play with him, and he’s obviously extraordinary at his craft. The man works and PLAYS hard,” Vedder wrote, noting Laboriel Jr’s decades-long tenure with Paul McCartney. As it stands, Pearl Jam currently has no further dates on their calendar.
