Peter Gabriel Announces New Album ‘o/i’, Completing Massive 25-Track Project
Peter Gabriel has officially announced the release of his eleventh studio album, o/i, arriving on November 27 through Real World. The upcoming record follows 2023’s i/o, marking the shortest gap between the musician’s studio albums since the early 1980s.
A 25-Track Marathon
Just as he did for i/o, Gabriel has spent the past year rolling out individual tracks on each full moon. The new 13-track collection pairs with i/o to form a massive 25-track joint project. Gabriel described the creative process as more of a marathon than a sprint, noting that it stands as the longest album he has ever put out.
Lyrically, the songs tackle humanity’s relationship with nature, the passage of time, and the looming transition driven by artificial intelligence, quantum computing, and brain-computer interfaces. Explaining his thematic perspective, Gabriel noted that artists have a role to look into the mists and hold up a mirror when they catch sight of something. He argued that humans have long operated with a sense of entitlement to exploit the world, suggesting instead that recognizing our place as part of nature can help us find our proper footing.
Collaborators and Formats
The record features an extensive roster of contributors. Long-standing band members guitarist David Rhodes, bassist Tony Levin, and drummer Manu Katché return alongside touring bandmates Richard Evans, Josh Shpak, and Don E, plus Real World staffers Faye Dolle and Katie May. The album also features contributions from Brian Eno, guitarists Leo Nocentelli and Tony Berg, drummer Abe Rounds, pianist Tom Cawley, trumpeter Paolo Fresu, cellist Linnea Olsson, multi-instrumentalist Evan Smith, and vocal support from Gabriel’s daughter Melanie.
o/i will be released as a four-CD pack containing both the Bright-Side mixes by Mark ‘Spike’ Stent and the Dark-Side mixes by Tchad Blake for all 13 tracks, as well as standalone double vinyl albums. Hans-Martin Buff returns to shape the digital-only Dolby Atmos In-Side mix.
