Pink Floyd Meddle Vinyl Reissue and Echoes Film Restoration

Pink Floyd have announced a new San Tropez Orange Marble vinyl edition of their 1971 album Meddle, arriving via Sony Music on October 17 for this year’s National Album Day.

Alongside the physical reissue, fans will also get a newly restored high-resolution version of the iconic Echoes sequence from the 1973 Australian surf film Crystal Voyager. The video will be made available via Pink Floyd’s YouTube channel on October 17.

The Story Behind Crystal Voyager

Directed by David Elfick and written and narrated by surfer, photographer, and filmmaker George Greenough, Crystal Voyager used groundbreaking underwater cinematography. Greenough utilized a self-built 17-pound camera rig that captured footage from inside a wave for the first time.

While looking for a soundtrack, Greenough happened upon a record his mother bought him. Upon listening to the closing track, Echoes, he noted that its 23-minute running time matched the film’s closing sequence perfectly.

Greenough approached the band for permission. Lacking the funds to pay them outright, a deal was struck allowing Elfick and Greenough to use the song in exchange for letting Pink Floyd use the footage as background visuals for their live shows.

“I’d never heard Echoes before until my mother got it for me,” Greenough recalled. “When I heard it, I went, ‘my god, that’s gotta be the soundtrack!’ We asked about using it, and we made a deal with Pink Floyd, and everybody had smiles on their faces.”
