Queen Budapest: Final Filmed Concert Heads to IMAX and Physical Release
Queen’s final filmed concert is getting a grand global revival. Queen Budapest captures the legendary English rock band’s July 27, 1986, performance at Népstadion as part of The Magic Tour, and it is currently screening in standard and IMAX theaters worldwide via Trafalgar.
The release arrives in recognition of the concert’s 40th anniversary. Taking place just five shows before the final live performance of the classic lineup featuring Freddie Mercury, Brian May, Roger Taylor, and John Deacon, the historic footage carries a profound emotional weight for fans of the band.
A Historic Night Behind the Iron Curtain
The July 1986 concert marked a groundbreaking cultural moment. Queen became the first Western rock band to perform a stadium show behind the Iron Curtain during a period of intense political and cultural change. The show drew an 80,000-ticket sellout crowd, while an estimated 45,000 additional people listened from outside the stadium, with some travelers making the journey from as far away as Russia and Poland.
Hungary’s top cameramen captured the event on 35mm film, deploying 17 cameras and rolling through 25 miles of film. The entire operation received rare approval from the Hungarian government, marking a first for a Communist State at the time. This original 35mm footage has now been meticulously restored in 4K for its theatrical run.
